Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Macy's Great American Marching Band

In 2019 I auditioned for The Macy's Great American Marching Band. I was delighted to be selected as 1 of 20 Color Guard members from all over the country.

Guard might sound like a strange choice of sport for a blind kid... Here's how that happened:

My older brother, sister & I would have 1 year all together in high school: Silas would be a Senior Percussionist & Sadie would be a Varsity Trainer as a Junior. As a Freshman, I wanted on that field w/ my siblings!

At 1 of Silas' band competitions when I was a middle-schooler, I stood along the fence to catch a close-up of the action. A whirling, moving, fuzzy group of humans whizzed by me. "What is that?" I asked my mom. "That's the Color Guard." she replied. Sadie called her best friend over to the fence & Bailey promptly handed her flag over  to me. SOLD! That was my ticket to the field!

Months & months of training, hard work, tears & bruises got me to auditions.

I made the team! Tossing 7 foot poles w/ silks attached over my head using muscle memory & learning to march by counting my steps, I kept working hard. I lettered as a Freshman & had my name put on my letter jacket in Braille. Competitive Indoor Winter Guard, Varsity, Head Guard Captain of my 6A Texas high school- and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City...
